My manager days
Norio Nakajima, President of Murata Manufacturing ■In 1991, he was seconded to a French parts manufacturer. When I first joined the company, I worked on the development of materials and manufacturing processes for multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs). MLCCs are now indispensable electronic components for smartphones and personal computers. However, at that time, I wanted to do something different, so I requested an overseas posting.
I was assigned to LCC Thomson in France, which produced electronic components. It was a job that utilized MLCC lamination technology in various fields. I was in charge of the development of the technology to make the sheets used for lamination thin and smooth.
I also devoted myself to my hobby, rugby. I called all the local teams one after another and joined a strong team with professional players. As a scrum half, I wrote French on the back of my hand in katakana to give instructions to my teammates and also participated in official games.
On the other hand, things didn't go well. My boss thought that I had gone all the way to France and achieved results through rugby instead of work. I was recalled after two years without producing any results.
■After returning to Japan, he was assigned to a new product development team.At the time, the only products that used multilayer technology, which Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. excels at, were MLCCs and parts called "LC filters" used in mobile phones. A specialized unit was created at the office in Yasu City, Shiga Prefecture to expand the market with products that were completely different from these, and I was assigned to it.
What we worked hard on was the development of "ceramic multi-layer substrates." It is a technology that realizes functions such as MLCC and LC filters with ICs (integrated circuits). Today, Murata Manufacturing is the top company with a 40% global market share for MLCCs, but at the time I believed in the potential of multi-layer substrates so much that I even wrote a paper saying, "MLCCs are no longer needed."
