On March 11th, Sterling (Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture) announced two models of radio lights for disaster prevention. The standard "hand-crank charging" (dynamo power generation) was abolished, and smartphones and other devices were charged with alkaline batteries.
"STP-748" equipped with a bright light of about 100lm (lumen)Sterling said, ``Mobile phones around 2004 had a battery capacity of about 600mAh, but today's smartphones have a battery capacity of 3000mAh. Most of them are class, and the capacity has increased about five times." It takes a considerable amount of time and effort to increase the battery level of a smartphone by 1% with hand-crank charging, but using multiple alkaline batteries increases the battery level by 1% in an average of 3 minutes.
The extension of the recommended usage period of alkaline batteries to 10 years was also a boost. Alkaline batteries in the 1990s lasted three years.
The new product "STP-748" can charge a smartphone by inserting 4 AA alkaline batteries and connecting a cable. According to Sterling's verification, it took an hour and a half to restore an empty battery to 23%. On the other hand, it took 5 hours and 45 minutes to recharge the conventional model by hand, and the handle had to be turned about 82,000 times.
Comparing the time it took to restore an empty battery to 23%"STP-652" with enhanced radio functions such as front speakers and station memory. Uses 3 alkaline batteries to charge the smartphoneThe new product will be released on April 16th. The price is 5,500 yen for the STP-748 equipped with a bright light of about 100 lm (lumen), and 11,000 yen for the "STP-652" with enhanced radio function (both tax included).
However, since there is a certain demand for hand-cranked charging, we plan to sell a conventional radio light as well.
Sterling is an import general trading company established in 1965 (former name: Sanya Trading). Initially, the company dealt with radio lights as outdoor goods, but after the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in 1995, it attracted attention as a disaster prevention product, and since then it has focused on developing original products.
